Functional Lab Testing
Jessica brings a wealth of experience in using advanced functional and DNA testing to uncover the root causes of health issues and create personalised health plans. These tests offer deep insights into your unique biochemistry, identifying imbalances and guiding targeted interventions.
After your initial consultation, I'll recommend any tests that could provide valuable insights into your health. Based on your symptoms and health goals, we'll suggest the most appropriate tests. Functional tests are optional.
These comprehensive tests, unavailable through public healthcare, offer a more detailed analysis. We partner with top laboratories in the UK, Europe, and the USA, including Genova Diagnostics, Precision Analytical, Invivo Diagnostics, Functional Dx, Colabs, Vivo Health, Regenerus Laboratories, Viva Health Laboratories, and Lifecode Gx.
Symptoms Addressed by Functional Testing
We use a wide range of tools to help clients identify the root cause of their symptoms. Functional laboratory tests are part of our toolkit and can provide valuable information in areas such as:
-
Your body needs a balance of nutrients, like vitamins, minerals, and other vital substances, to function properly. When you have a deficiency, it means you're not getting enough of a particular nutrient. For example, if you're not getting enough iron, you might feel tired and weak because iron is essential for carrying oxygen in your blood.
On the flip side, an excess happens when you have too much of a nutrient or substance in your body. This can also cause problems. For instance, having too much vitamin D can lead to too much calcium in your blood, which might harm your kidneys.
So, both deficiencies and excesses are about imbalances in what your body needs to stay healthy. The goal is to have just the right amount of everything—like keeping all the ingredients in a recipe balanced—to make sure your body runs smoothly.
-
Including thyroid, adrenal (cortisol, cortisone, adrenaline, noradrenaline), and sex hormones (oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, DHT)
-
Autoimmunity testing is a process used to check if your immune system is mistakenly attacking your own body. Normally, your immune system protects you by fighting off harmful invaders like bacteria and viruses. However, in autoimmune diseases, your immune system gets confused and starts attacking healthy tissues, thinking they're threats.
Autoimmunity testing involves a series of blood tests that look for specific markers or antibodies. These antibodies are like warning signals that your immune system might be misfiring. For example, if you have rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition, your body might produce a specific type of antibody that attacks your joints.
-
Glucose monitoring testing is a way to check the level of sugar (glucose) in your blood.
For example:
Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM): This involves wearing a small sensor under your skin that continuously measures your glucose levels throughout the day and night. It sends the data to a device or smartphone, allowing us to see trends and make adjustments in real-time.
-
Digestive function testing is a way to assess how well your digestive system is working. This includes checking how your body breaks down and absorbs nutrients from the food you eat, as well as how it handles waste.
An example of digestive function testing is a stool test. This test analyses a sample of your stool to check for various things like the presence of bacteria, parasites, or undigested food particles. It can also measure levels of digestive enzymes, which are crucial for breaking down food.
-
SIBO breath testing is a diagnostic tool used to detect Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), a condition where too many bacteria are present in the small intestine. Normally, most bacteria are found in the large intestine, but when they overgrow in the small intestine, it can cause digestive issues like bloating, gas, diarrhea, or constipation.
-
H. pylori testing is used to detect the presence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a type of bacteria that can infect the stomach lining and is a common cause of ulcers, chronic gastritis, and sometimes stomach cancer.
-
Intestinal permeability testing, often referred to as a "leaky gut" test, is used to assess how well the lining of your intestines is functioning. The intestines are designed to allow nutrients and water to pass into your bloodstream while keeping harmful substances, like toxins and undigested food particles, out. When the intestinal lining becomes too permeable, or "leaky," it can allow these harmful substances to pass through, potentially leading to inflammation and various health issues.
-
Yeast or fungal overgrowth testing is used to determine whether there is an excessive growth of yeast, particularly Candida, or other fungi in the body. Normally, small amounts of yeast live harmlessly in various parts of the body, like the gut, mouth, and skin. However, when the balance of microorganisms in the body is disrupted—by factors like antibiotics, a high-sugar diet, or a weakened immune system—yeast can overgrow, leading to various health issues.
Here’s how yeast/fungal overgrowth testing is generally conducted:
Option 1. Stool Test
How it works: A stool sample is analysed to detect the presence of yeast or fungi in the digestive tract. The test looks for high levels of yeast, particularly Candida, which could indicate an overgrowth.
Process: You provide a stool sample, which is then sent to a lab for analysis. The lab checks for yeast and the balance of other microorganisms in your gut.
Option 2. Urine Organic Acids Test (OAT)
How it works: This test measures specific organic acids in the urine that are byproducts of yeast and fungal metabolism. High levels of certain acids, like D-arabinitol, can suggest an overgrowth of Candida.
Process: You provide a urine sample, which is tested in a lab. The test results can help identify not just the presence of yeast overgrowth, but also related metabolic imbalances.
-
Vaginal health testing involves a series of assessments to evaluate the overall health of the vagina, including the balance of bacteria, the presence of infections, and other potential issues that could affect vaginal health. This testing is important for diagnosing and managing conditions that can cause symptoms like itching, discharge, odor, pain, or discomfort.
-
(mercury, lead, arsenic, copper) due to environmental or occupational pollutants
-
Mould and mycotoxin testing are used to determine if you have been exposed to harmful moulds and the toxins they produce, known as mycotoxins. Exposure to mould and mycotoxins can lead to a variety of health issues, particularly if you have been in an environment with significant mould growth, such as a water-damaged building.
-
Epigenetic testing is a type of analysis that examines changes in your gene expression that are not caused by alterations in the DNA sequence itself but by modifications that turn genes on or off. These changes, known as epigenetic modifications, can be influenced by various environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and even your diet. Epigenetic testing aims to provide insights into how these factors are affecting your genes and, consequently, your overall health.
Other Functional Tests
-
This comprehensive stool test assesses digestive health by evaluating the microbiome, inflammation, and other markers of gut health. It helps identify issues like dysbiosis, infections, and digestive insufficiencies.
-
NutrEval is a nutritional evaluation test that assesses vitamin, mineral, amino acid, and antioxidant status, along with markers of oxidative stress and detoxification. It provides a detailed view of nutritional imbalances and needs.
-
Similar to the GI Effects test, GI 360 provides a comprehensive analysis of gut health, focusing on the microbial balance, pathogen detection, and markers of inflammation and digestive function.
-
These tests identify food sensitivities and allergies that can cause various symptoms, from digestive issues to skin problems and fatigue. Understanding these can help in creating an elimination diet to improve overall health.
-
This DNA test evaluates your genetic predisposition to methylation issues, which can affect detoxification, hormone regulation, and neurotransmitter balance. It helps in understanding how your body processes nutrients and toxins.
-
Functional Dx offers a comprehensive blood panel that goes beyond standard tests to include markers of inflammation, metabolic function, nutrient status, and more. It provides a holistic view of your overall health.
-
This urine test measures metabolic byproducts (organic acids) to assess mitochondrial function, detoxification, neurotransmitter levels, and microbial activity in the gut. It helps in identifying metabolic imbalances and nutrient deficiencies.
-
These tests detect the presence of mould and mycotoxins in the body, which can cause a range of health issues including respiratory problems, fatigue, and neurological symptoms. It’s crucial for individuals exposed to damp environments or who suspect mould-related health problems.
